Buying wine as an investment

Some wines make a good investment because they are rare and have an established reputation causing them to appreciate in value. Possibly the most famous of these in Australia is Penfolds’ Grange Hermitage, a Shiraz style Claret that has been made since 1951 (a bottle of that vintage now might set you back $50,000 or more if you can find one). Although young in terms of wine heritage, Australia has some notable wines that do and will appreciate in value.

A good investment wine is not necessarily a guarantee of a high quality drinking wine. The investment values are arrived at by reputation. A particular vintage may have enjoyed popularity for any number of reasons and become scarce because only a limited number of bottles were produced. What results is a collectors market and wine changes hands through auctions, private sales, estate dissolutions and wine club memberships.

What makes a good investment wine however, is the fact that you are able to sell the wine at some future date for a sum greater than what you paid. Therefore the condition of the wine-or more importantly, the bottle-is of paramount consideration. The provenance of an investment wine is important. Before buying, you need to establish its history of origin and previous ownership. Satisfied that the bottle is in good condition, once in your possession it needs to be cellared correctly in the absence of heat, light and movement. You should document your ownership and the conditions of its cellaring before selling it to a new buyer.

What makes good wine?

The winemaking process

The quality of a wine is affected by a wide variety of factors that occur in and as a result of the winemaking, cellaring and handling processes. One of the key factors is the terrain and climate, commonly referred to as a ‘region’, where the grapes are grown. Different conditions affect different varieties differently. A Shiraz style from McLaren Vale in South Australia, for example, is a heavier and darker wine than the same style from the Swan Valley in Western Australia, which tends to be lighter and more peppery. A Chardonnay from the Hunter Valley is more full-bodied than one from Margaret River.

While knowing which vines are best suited to a soil type and climate is one aspect, another is knowing when to pick the fruit for particular effect. The fruit’s flavour at the time of picking is a major character of the residual flavours of the wine. After initial fermentation, some winemakers choose to ferment in oak, others not to. Using oak affects the reduction of tannins in the wine. Different types of oak-English, American, old-affect the flavour and character of the wine as it matures to its nominal alcohol level. It is in the barrel that a lot of transformations in flavours and character occur, and a great deal of skill is required to know exactly when to bottle the wine.

Different winemakers have different techniques and, while a good wine can’t be made from bad grapes, it is largely the winemaker’s skill that produces a good wine.

Taste

The Hunter Valley in New South Wales produces some of Australia’s finest wines, while in the West, Margaret River, t4he Swan Valley and the Plantagenet districts all produce fine wines.

Cleanskins enable a wine producer to present a lower cost bottle, but this is mostly achieved by not having to identify the origins of the grape, or the varietal blends that make up the wine. And while it is true that some cleanskins are eminently drinkable wines, evidence suggests that they are generally of a far poorer quality than branded label products. It is suggested that you taste the wine before purchasing any cleanskins.

For Those Times When You Might Want to Do Without ‘Had’

Have you ever read a short story you’ve written and discovered an overuse of the word ‘had?’ I certainly have. It’s one of the dilemmas I once faced with my own writing. Besides learning and practicing the rules of grammar, and the rules of fiction writing, I also found myself grappling with ‘had.’ It’s not the occasional ‘had’ that troubled me, but the ‘had’ that appeared in every, or every other, sentence.

So, in an attempt to keep improving my writing, obeying some of the rules of fiction writing while breaking others, I tried to find an alternative to ‘had.’ The solution I found happened to be the same solution for ridding as many adverbs as possible from my stories. The solution for ridding ‘had’ from a few of your sentences is to replace ‘had’ with a strong, more specific verb.

Consider these sentences:

Richard had two minutes to beat his deadline.

Tom had five marbles.

Rewritten without ‘had,’ the same sentences might read as the following:

Two minutes remained of Richard’s deadline.

Tom owned five marbles.

Now, consider this short passage:

She had the fate of the world in her hands. Mankind had brought the earth to the brink of destruction. No one but her had the power to save millions of lives.

After attempting to get rid of ‘had,’ and to hopefully strengthen the sentences, the passage might read like this:

She held the fate of the world in her hands. The earth teetered on the brink of destruction, thanks to mankind, and no one but her possessed the power to save millions of lives.

Or, perhaps, the passage would read like this:

She held the fate of the world in her hands. Thanks to mankind, the earth now teetered on the brink of destruction. No one but her possessed the power to save millions of lives.

Try playing around with the words to see how you might rewrite the sentences without using the word ‘had.’ And remember to have fun while you do.

The suggestion I’ve made on how to eliminate ‘had’ is by no means written in stone. Just as it appears okay to occasionally use passive voice, the occasional use of ‘had’ appears okay, as well. “‘Had’ is not always bad,” as the saying goes. Please remember to take my suggestion with a grain of salt, and to have fun with it should you decide to give it a try with your own writing.

Halloween, Gender and Sexuality

My grandparents, who now rest in peace, loved Halloween. They loved the fun. They delighted in children. They enjoyed the opportunity to play, as children do, even in their eighties and nineties. They enjoyed dressing up in costume and going trick-or-treating in their neighborhood.

My grandfather, who was only 5 foot 6 inches, would dress as an old woman. And my grandmother, who was 5 foot 11 inches, would dress as an old man. This cross-dressing couple then delighted their neighbors and friends with a friendly Halloween visit-and then shared whatever sweet “treats” they received with the children of their church and with their grandchildren.

What a delight! How refreshing to see a couple who are able to play together for almost 60 years. And how refreshing that as a thoroughly heterosexual couple, they seemed energized by the gender play at Halloween!

I learned many things from my grandparents. Those learnings included the value of play and the freedom to explore gender roles just for the fun of it. I do not know whether or not they extended that gender play into their sexual relationship. I hope they did, for it certainly seemed to energize other parts of their healthy intimate relationship.

Sometimes we identify Halloween as a time to explore the dark side of life. I rather like to think of Halloween as a time when we have permission to seek out and explore hidden treasures in relationships. Explore new forms of play, explore different roles, explore your fantasies (even if only at a verbal fantasy level). What kinds of “treats” can you offer the one you love this Halloween? (Avoid the “tricks” that may disrespect or hurt in any way; any Halloween “tricks” within your sexual relationship must be mutually agreed upon in advance.)

Just remember a few basic rules. (1) Safety first. Everyone must feel safe or the play can be neither intimate nor fun. (2) Mutual respect and communication can foster intimate encounters both fresh and fulfilling. Use that communication as a way to excite the mind of the one you love and an excited body will soon follow. (3) Have fun together. Make Halloween a special treat for your relationship!

In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Love and Relationships. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

Several persons begin relationships out of desire, which is the opposite of aspiration. Once the relationship progresses and one tires of the other, they often drift worlds apart. These types of relationships are often harmful; since selfish motivation sparks, the relationship and thus the result only bring down the outlook of love and relationship. When a person has desire in mind while starting a relationship, it is almost guaranteed there will be other relationships outside of the relationship, and the other person will hurt since they are in love alone.

A trail of broken hearts follows behind these types of relationships. Thus, knowing who you are is the start that determines if you will find true love and relationship. If you are in contact with your emotions, personality, beliefs, standards, and so forth, thus you can touch the fine lines of love and relationship while remaining in love and in the relationship. Thus, lust, love and relationship have a separation that needs defined to make love last.

Desires are a mindful response to emotions triggered by appealing appetizers, and backed with impulses. Lust throughout the years has proven harmful, especially if the action acted out on lust has gain in mind, which focuses on sexual pleasures.

Nowadays, few people remain steadfast in love and relationships, while considering love in the context delivered from originality. Religion, politics, unfaithfulness, lust, and other influences often join man and woman together, yet still relationships fail.

Love behind the years has confirmed that respect, consideration and other elements of love are non-existing, and thus relationships often fail. When two people join in relationships and love they must adhere to the advice provided to them by the Law of God and not man. When couples step on boundaries and disregard true advice they often find them self-heading down the path to divorce and/or separation, thus, finding true love takes skill, patients, long-suffering, and other human mechanisms to make love last.

A good relationship is based on trust, love, and faith, self-control and sharing. When one partner is giving more than the other partner this is not love. When one partner trusts that his or her partner is faithful and the partner is out spreading it around like the plague then someone is going to get hurt.

Thus, in the present day of love and relationships, hurt often consumes relationships, thus divorce and/or separation result. Some relationships can withstand the weathers with one partner working, but all relationships take two to make it last. Thus, some men have a history of proving unfaithful, dishonest, deceitful, et cetera. At one time women were never heard of committing such acts as adultery, murder, or abusing the mate. Thus, nowadays women fed up with the ways many men have demonstrated throughout history, including engaging in adulterous affairs, and inappropriate materials, thus nowadays women are making a statement by acting out the same.

Women at one time worked at home raising the children and taking care of the household. Often the man would work, bringing home the bread and rarely did you hear reports of divorce or separation. Still they existed, but at present divorces and separation is an ongoing issue in society.

Nowadays, it is next to impossible to find pure love. Good men often find women that treat them ill, while bad men are mistreating women badly that their views of men diminish over time. Good women often find men that cheat, lie, or take them for granted, thus finding a good relationship nowadays is next to impossible.

Likewise, women at present are taking a stand, thus showing that low tolerance is in the making. The one surefire element that composes true love is long-suffering, thus men and women alike nowadays lack the ability to illustrate this ingredient that makes up love.

Different relationships in the world boil down to good or bad relationships. When two people join in intimate relations, both parties must work hard to make the relationship work. A bad relationship will utilize tools believing that the mechanisms will keep the spice in his or her life when they feel tired out of the mate. In other words, a bad relationship focuses on sexual gratification, which never occurs, since he or she tires out quickly. The person may engage in pornographic reading or viewing, promiscuous relationships, violence, and so forth to gratify the desire.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

Tell Other Russian Women Your Decision About The One You’ve Chosen

Once you have met the woman of your dreams, you ask her to be your wife. You are excited about your future plans and you can’t wait to bring her home.

Unfortunately you have some unfinished business to take care of. You remember all the women you were courting? Well, you have to tell them that you made your decision and that they are Runner-up to Miss America.

Unless you are a masochist or have zero empathy, you will feel horrible about this. Do you remember what its like to break up with a girlfriend? Well, think about breaking up with a number of women at the same time. Ouch.

You don’t need to contact all two hundred women at the social that you went to. Probably most of them have survived the blow of your not calling them right after the social.

But if you dated a number of women fairly seriously, you definitely have to deliver the news to them. It’s the right thing to do.

The best way to deliver your message is in person, but if that’s not possible, by telephone.

You probably remember receiving a “Dear John” letter in your life. It didn’t feel very good, did it?

There is no good way to do this, but there are plenty of bad ways. One is to take the coward’s way out and just don’t call or tell them.

The other is a general announcement issued like a proclamation. Worse than a “Dear John” letter is one addressed “To Whom It May Concern.”

How would you feel if you got the bad news delivered by post card that had the news written on it so that everyone could read it.

How would you feel if you received a photocopy of a typed pro forma “Dear John” letter with your name written in next to the salutation, “Dear __________.”

What a personal touch!

Yes, I have heard of cretins doing this and worse.

Another less than satisfactory method is to tell the marriage agency personnel to deliver the message for you. This is almost as bad as “To Whom It May Concern.”

Sometimes it is difficult to handle these situations properly. For one, you usually have limited time while traveling and don’t have the time to handle all the situations in the ideal manner you would like.

But make the effort to deliver the message the best way you can, as painful as it may be. It’s part of your responsibility in this process. You don’t get to dance all night without paying the fiddler.

The bottom line is ‘do unto others as you would have others do unto you.’ The Golden Rule.

Bollywood Movie Review - Lage Raho Munnabhai

Okay fingers up, how many of you have seen this movie? May not be a blockbuster or a box office hit hindi movie but it is definitely worth a watch. Perhaps more than once. Why? Just imagine, Sanjay Dutt tackling his enemy by following the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. For the uninitiated, he is a beefcaked bollywood actor with a really mean mafia look who looks like a former Brisbane Lions regular player. I was refering to the former of course.

This is definitely one of my favourite movies as the story, screenplay and entertainment factors are brought up very well. This movie goes down as one of the most meaningful movies in Indian film industry. The essence of the movie is about applying the teachings of Gandhi in today’s world and downright hilariousness is ensured from the pairing of Arshad Warsi and Sanjay Dutt. Hahaha… watch it. No seriously… watch it.

This is the second installment to the Munnabhai MBBS movie series. The kind hearted don, Munnabhai (played by Sanjay Dutt), researches day and night on Mahatma Gandhi in order to impress the lady of his dreams and that is when Gandhi appears in front of him either as a soul or a figment of Munnabhai’s hallucination. An adventure then starts in a meaningful way for him where he learns how to deal with people and their problems by applying Gandhi’s principles.

Screenplay:

Perhaps the sole challenge of the movie is the application of Gandhi’s philosophy to solve today’s people related problems and it is carried out so well in the movie. The comic timing of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi is flawless. Boman Irani, in his typical fashion of doing something different in each movie, contributes further to the comedy by portraying a very stereotypical image of a Sardar. Even though the comedy does justice to the entertainment factor on a high scale, it does not deviate from the central theme and is able to deliver all the messages beautifully.

Cinematography:

Cinematography is done fairly well according to a typical Indian movie standard.

Video Editing:

There is not much video editing for the movie since there is no need for it. It is mainly focused in songs, especially in the Pal Pal song sang by Bollywood melody queen, Shreya Ghoshal.

Your Resume Must Represent Your Career Goals

When drafting your resume, it is easy to fall into the habit of focusing on the past. After all, much of your resume will consist of a list of things you’ve done-from positions you’ve held to special awards you’ve received to degrees you’ve attained. A resume is, in fact, a compilation of your professional and, in some cases, personal history. Therefore, admittedly, much of your resume will have sentences and clauses that are in the past tense.

And yet, a resume should also be a forward-looking document. In other words, it should not simply indicate where you’ve been-it should also inform a potential employer about where you’re headed. As a result, in order to craft a truly effective resume, you must be somewhat futuristic in your thinking. This means clearly articulating your career goals within the text of your resume.

First Step: Define Your Goals

Placing your career goals on your resume can be quite a challenge if you do not have a clear idea of what those goals are. If you are in this position, you’re certainly not alone. Many of us have difficulty visualizing where we would like to be five or ten years down our career path. In a number of cases, this may be the result of selling ourselves short, thinking that the highest levels of achievement in our chosen field are closed to us because we are lacking in some area-interpersonal communication, written communication, decision-making ability, or other job skills which are critically important for managers.

However, if you talk with someone who has made significant progress in his or her career, you might be surprised to learn that this individual also faced feelings of inadequacy or believed that he or she was ill prepared for the job now held. In other words, it would be wrong to assume that a corporate executive is inherently more talented or more intelligent than you are.

Perhaps you would like to secure a managerial position…maybe you’d like to teach at the college level…or perhaps you would like to own your own company some day. Jot both immediate and long-term goals down on paper so you have some idea what kind of information you’d like to convey on your resume.

Showcase Your Goals

Once you have defined your career goals, it is important that you showcase them on your resume. Of course, there are various schools of thought about how to highlight career goals most effectively. Which approach you ultimately decide to take depends on a number of factors: what your colleagues and mentors consider to be most effective; what you yourself are comfortable with; and what is the most appropriate approach for the position you’re attempting to pursue.

One effective means of spotlighting your career goals is by placing them under a “Career Objective” category in your resume. This category affords you the opportunity to clearly articulate the direction in which you’d like your career path to go. If you have more than one career goal to list, it’s perhaps most effective to list your goals in bullet-point format.

But there are also some other creative ways you can indicate your career goals on your resume. For instance, in the supplemental information you provide for each position you’ve held, you can indicate how that particular job-or the duties that came with it-helped to move you toward your career goal. As with all the other text in your resume, this information should be stated clearly and succinctly. A simple phrase can inform a prospective employer about how a position aided you in developing the skills needed for achieving your career goals.

Avoid the Temptation of Omitting Critical Information

Unfortunately, some job seekers become so focused on their career goals that they feel that they have to radically alter their resumes in order to demonstrate their dedication to their goals. Such an approach is sure to backfire because it creates a resume that is misleading. When an employer discovers that you have omitted key information, he or she may be understandably reluctant to hire you.

For instance, consider the following scenario: You’ve just learned about a position that is available at a highly-respected company known for its fantastic promotion policies, benefit packages, and other perks. This is exactly the type of job you’d like to have-not only because of the opportunities it presents, but also because it would help you immensely in accomplishing your long-term career goals.

You eliminate every job that does not directly relate to your career goal. By “streamlining” your resume, you hope to increase your chances of securing the position you desire.

Unfortunately, things in the business world are not that simple. By omitting references to certain jobs in your resume, you are doing a disservice to your employer-and to yourself. You are making it appear as if you’ve been headed in the same direction throughout your career when, in fact, your career might have taken a number of twists and turns. In addition, your streamlining has resulted in the appearance of serious gaps in your work history. If a would-be employer believes that you were unemployed for long periods of time, he or she may simply place your resume in the reject pile.

Be Open-Minded

Recognize that your career goals can change throughout your employment. As a result, you may need to tinker with the career goals text in your resume every so often. This is not an admission of defeat-rather, it is simply an indication that, as your work experience broadens, your ultimate objectives may evolve, taking you along paths you never dreamed possible.
