Acoustic or Electric Guitar - Which Is Best For The Beginner

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

Having played the guitar for a number of years, I am often asked this question by eager learners - Should I start learning with the acoustic or electric guitar? In this article, I’ll talk a bit about both so you can come to an informed decision.

First of all, let me get something straight. The actual notes and fretboards work the same for both, so if you start with either one, its always interchangeable, although the playing techniques might differ.

Most younger players would gravitate towards the electric guitar thanks to MTV and the cool factor . The acoustic guitar seems to have a more folksy image to it. Both sound very different, with the acoustic relying purely on natural acoustic principles to generate the sound, using the body of the guitar as an amplifier . The electric guitar on the other hand needs an electric amplifier to generate sound. There are of course hybrids, but that is not relevent in this article.

So, which is better for the beginner? I’ll cover 3 aspects below - cost, convenience and playability.

Cost

Both are about the same, you can get really expensive custom built electric of acoustic guitars. However, the electric can start to get more expensive simply because of the tempting options and accessories like amplifiers, pre-amps, effects pedals, volume pedals, etc. The acoustic on the other hand might be simpler to start with. It plays right out of the box!

Convenience

Again the acoustic wins as you can take it almost everywhere without worrying about a power socket. There are personal practice gadgets available for the electric guitar which allows you to practice with headphones.

Playability

My personal preference here is the electric guitar. I find it easier to play, with the strings being softer and thus less effort to play.

Either way, they both should be respected and used for what they are and any good guitarist should be adept at both. For the beginner, I would prefer the acoustic as it helps a lot in ear training as you get accustomed to the vibrations of the body making the tuning of the strings are easier to detect.

My final piece of advice is to don’t get too obsessed with your instrument while you’re learning but focus on the music instead. Once you start to get better at it you’ll know instinctively what sort of ‘ax’ you’ll need. I’ve met my fair share of musicians who are so into the gear but have not improved in their skill much and on the other hand, have heard some amazing, soul-stirring music from blues masters that have played the same guitar all their life!

Al Tan tries to be a guitarist when he’s not building websites. One of the best resource to learn guitar online that he’s come across which has step-by-step guitar lessons on video is www.LearnMusicFrom.Us/Guitar http://www.LearnMusicFrom.Us/Guitar . For acoustic guitar, try www.LearnMusicFrom.Us/AcousticGuitar http://www.LearnMusicFrom.Us/AcousticGuitar .

The Dark Side of Fitness

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

A recent article in the New York Times, Doctors See a Big Rise in Injuries As Young Athletes Train Nonstop highlights a serious and growing health concern for teenagers and their parents. Typical injuries include stress fractures, cracked kneecaps and frayed heel tendons and damage to the alignment of the spinal column brought on by excessive flexing. As the article states, “…doctors in pediatric sports medicine say it is as if they have happened upon a new childhood disease, and the cause is the overaggressive culture of organized youth sports.”

The consequences of this new “disease” can be very serious, often requiring many months of expensive rehabilitation or even surgery. Some young athletes are left facing a lifetime of pain and physical restrictions.

The article emphasizes the role played by pressure from coaches and parents and by a culture in many sports that places so much emphasis on performance, and on winning, that players often ignore the pain signals coming from their bodies.

I was struck by the parallels between this teenage phenomenon and the wave of injuries reported during the early stages of the fitness boom of the 1980s. At that time, there were a great many newspaper and magazine reports of everything from severe shin splints caused by prolonged running on concrete to serious back and neck pain due to improper methods of weight lifting.

I can well remember the sudden influx of students during that period who came for Alexander Technique lessons after giving up on demanding exercise regimes because of pain or injury. They just wanted to learn how they could get back to where they were before and sadly that was not always possible. It seems that when a new fitness or sports trend begins, there is a heavy price to be paid by some participants.

What strikes me about both the current spate of injuries and the one that took place two decades ago is that in both cases, a huge emphasis on QUANTITY of exercise almost completely obliterated any concern with the QUALITY with which the exercise was performed. All too often fitness programs tend to be about things like how many miles you run, how many pitches you pitch, or how many hours you swim rather that how well you’re using your body as you run, pitch or swim.

It’s a bit like driving a car as fast as you can, for a long distance, without bothering to learn how to drive it well!

I am convinced that the current over-emphasis on quantity is one of the main reasons there are still so many sports and fitness related injuries. Sometimes it comes from the athlete him or herself - perhaps reflecting a common cultural idea that more is better. Sometimes it comes from outside. That certainly seems to be a large part of what’s going on with some young athletes today.

Anyone who studies the basic ideas of the Alexander Technique will very quickly see just how important the quality of one’s posture and movement is to the effectiveness and safety of any activity. This is true whether it’s a vigorous activity or something as mundane as using a computer or even watching TV. And if they decide to take up a new sport or fitness program, they have the knowledge and ability to approach it with skill, and with an appropriate level of body awareness and care.

(The article, “Doctors See a Big Rise in Injuries As Young Athletes Train Nonstop” can be found on page 1 of the February 22, 2005 issue of the New York Times.)

I Love French Wine and Food - A Burgundy Chardonnay

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

If you are looking for fine French wine and food, consider the Maconnais area of the Burgundy region in eastern France. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a local white Chardonnay.

Among France’s eleven wine-growing regions Burgundy (with its neighbor Beaujolais) is fourth in vineyard acreage. Partisans, and they are many, claim that Burgundy is really the number one or number two wine-producing region in France, if not in the world. The wine reviewed below comes from the Maconnais area of southern Burgundy, whose wine production is almost 90% white, almost exclusively Chardonnay. While this area produces three times as much white wine as the other areas of Burgundy, is not very well known.

If you are visiting the Maconnais area, and you really should, make sure to stop by the village of Cluny and its medieval abbey, once the largest church in all Europe. Today the site lies in ruins, as it has been since the French Revolution, but what ruins. This site includes a horse-breeding center which was founded by Napoleon using stone from the abbey. You’ll also want to see the Musee Ochier, a Romanesque lapidary museum. Don’t forget to tour the town of Autun once called Augustodonum, city of Augustus. The original name refers to Augustus Caesar who modestly described it as the sister and rival of Rome itself. Avoid disappointment, don’t expect Rome II. But do visit Autun’s Portes (Archways) and the Theatre Romain, once the largest arena in Gaul (Roman France) with room for 15,000 spectators. Every August (could that be a coincidence?) traditionally costumed locals put on a period piece. Talking about Napoleon, he and his brother studied at the local military academy, where at age nine the future Emperor first learnt French.

Before reviewing the Burgundy wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Pate en Croute de Grenouilles au Bleu de Bresse (Frog and Bresse Blue-Cheese Pie). For your second course savor Poulet de Bresse à la Creme-Trompettes de la Mort (Free-Range Bresse Chicken in Creamy Sauce with Horns of Plenty Mushrooms). Read more about Bresse chickens in our article I Love French Wine and Food - A Red Beaujolais. And as dessert indulge yourself with Ile Flottante (Floating Island, a Meringue Island in a Custard Sea.)

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC ‘En Paradis’ 2003 Louis Latour 12.6% about $18.50

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. This pretty wine from the Maconnais is pale yellow in color and has a beautiful nose of lemon, honey, apple, and tropical fruit. It is elegant and pleasing revealing hazelnut and fruit flavors on tasting. This wine is perfect for drinking now.

This Chardonnay was fermented in stainless steel tanks and never saw the inside of an oak barrel. The Pouilly-Vinzelles is a not very well-known neighbor of the more expensive Pouilly-Fuisse. And now for the review.

My first meal was a Poulet Chasseur (Chicken Cacciatore) that I was particularly proud of. The wine was very delicate and yet not weak. Its apple flavor expressed itself well. I enjoyed how the wine’s acid dealt with the meat’s grease, which was relatively low because I cooked the chicken without its skin.

The next meal was more pedestrian. It consisted of chicken legs in a soy, onion, and garlic sauce. The wine was refreshing and pleasant but fairly short.

Continuing to work my way down the food scale, the next pairing involved a baked noodle dish, a cheese-less lasagna with tomatoes, onions, peas, and chicken hamburger. The wine was appley and floral and went very well with the meal, but seemed a bit wasted.

The final meal was disappointing. It consisted of an omelet with brown mushrooms, local provolone cheese, and the fixings. The wine was pleasant but not at all special, in fact it was not particularly present.

The wine and cheese tastings were more successful than usual. The first pairing was with a soft, buttery northern Italian Bel Paese cow’s milk cheese. This cheese seemed to intensify the wine’s flavor. Then I tried the wine with a French Saint-Aubin, also a soft cow’s milk cheese. In its presence the wine became softer.

Final verdict. I’m not sure. This wine was sometimes quite good, but I think it was too expensive. What do you expect from a Burgundy? By the way, the label’s term En Paradis was not the least bit justified.

Levi Reiss has written, alone or with a co-author, ten books on computers and the Internet. Between you and me, he would rather just drink fine French or other wine, accompanied by the right foods and people. He teaches various and sundry computer classes at an Ontario French-language community college. His major wine website is www.theworldwidewine.com http://www.theworldwidewine.com .

Seychelles What To Know Before You Go

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

The Seychelles are truly paradise, with extraordinary beaches on almost every island, and they are virtually deserted. The forests are beautifully lush and green, and the underwater sights are amazing with more fish than you could ever dream of, whilst the colors of the sea will leave you spellbound. Another wonderful and man made sight is the lack of high rise hotels, as buildings have to be lower than the palm trees.

In addition if you want to see Green and Hawksbill turtles, then at certain times of the year you can do just that. So if it is nature trails and hiking that fascinates you, then Silhouette Island with no roads, and lots of trails would be perfect for you, especially because the thick vegetation means lots of wildlife.

If fishing, especially fly fishing is your thing, then get yourself to the bonefish flats near Alphonse, where you will catch literally dozens of fish. Add to this the historic and famous coco de mer on Praslin at the Vallee de Mai, and the millions of sooty terns on Bird, and you can see this is a paradise for nature lovers.

On the other hand, if you love beaches, then some of the best beaches in the world are to be found in the Seychelles, and for me it’s a toss up between Anse Lazio on Praslin, Bird Island beach which goes all the way round and is almost deserted, and Anse Victorin on Fregate, which probably wins the vote due to the exclusivity of Fregate, and the white sand, turquoise sea, and the fact it is cut off by rocky headlands on either side. These are just three, and you will realize it is difficult to set them apart when you have been there.

Whilst I personally don’t dive, but I do snorkel, I am reliably informed that the diving at Alphonse is just the best, but Desroches has the coral, and La Digue has the colourful fish, but to be truthful from the moment I walked into the water at Anse Lazio on Praslin and was immediately surrounded in knee deep water by hundreds of brightly coloured fish, I’ve never failed to be astounded by the snorkeling everywhere in the Seychelles.

Where you stay in the Seychelles is very dependent on your budget, and probably the greatest luxury is to be found at the resort on Fregate, home of the best beach too!! Here you stay in a villa with views to die for with your own Jacuzzi overlooking the ocean, it is pure pampered luxury, but it is not the only island with only one resort. Alphonse, Bird, Desroches, and Silhouette are all like this, if you want crowds go to Mahe!!

Praslin, and La Digue are a half way house with affordable hotels, and not many people.

People often ask about the food in the Seychelles, and what it’s like. It is a real fusion of flavours, best described as Creole. It features lots of coriander, chillies, ginger, lemongrass, pepper, and fresh herbs, blended into curries. Fish is in profusion, and seafood, particularly look out for Tuna, red snapper, kingfish, parrotfish, or octopus served raw and thinly sliced.
It’s great just book and go!!

Fish Oil Benefits

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

In the quest to achieve better health and wellness, fish oil supplements have become an increasingly popular way to take advantage of many different medical benefits. Fish oil originates from the tissues of oily fish, such as carp, herring, salmon, and fresh tuna. Today, fish oil is recommended as part of a healthy diet because of the amount of omega-3 fatty acids contained, which is known to reduce inflammation throughout the body and lessen the threat of coronary heart disease (among other things).

There are two main ways to include fish oil as part of a healthy diet. The first involves the consumption of oily fish, including sardines and cod, which contain oils throughout their body and about their gut, unlike other species of fish. Depending on the species, oily fish fillets may offer up to 30% oil. Besides omega-3 fatty acids, oily fish also provides a good source of vitamins A and D.

The second approach towards increasing the amount of fish oils in a diet is to purchase fish oil capsules or supplements. Many people are said to prefer the consumption of fish oil capsules because they are easy to follow and do not require laborious measurements in making sure recommended daily values are satisfied. To explore some of the many benefits associated with fish oil supplements and consumption, a few examples can be found below:

Decreased Pain Levels and Inflammation

Omega-3 fatty acids may posses the power to lessen inflammation in the body, as well as ease the pain associated with arthritis and cystitis. Rheumatoid arthritis patients often report an improvement in joint pains and inflammation when taking fish oil supplements.

Treats Depression and Stress

Some individuals have been able to ease their symptoms of depression by implementing omega-3 fish oil supplements into their diet. Fish oils have also been linked to showing promise in treating bipolar and psychotic patients. Supplements may also help to promote the overall mood of patients, and may even reduce premenstrual stress.

Cardiovascular Improvements

The heart, arteries, and veins may benefit from fish oil because it has been known to help lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure, while at the same time improving good cholesterol levels.

Fights Strokes and Heart Attack

The threat of stroke and heart attack may be decreased with the introduction of fish oils into a diet because they may help to prevent blood clots and other damage to the heart. A decreased risk of sudden death and heart attacks has also been seen.

Enhances Brain Activity

Fish oil is known to boost intelligence and overall happiness in users, as well as improve the memory and ability to stay focused. In the elderly, the risk of dementia and memory loss sometimes decreases with the use of fish oil supplements. Additionally, mothers who consume or take a high amount of omega-3/fish oils during pregnancy often give birth to children with a higher IQ.

Combats Childhood Disorders

Children, who suffer from disorders, such as ADD and ADHD, have experienced a better quality of life when incorporating fish oil fatty acids into their diet. Additional conditions that respond to fish oils include dyslexia and compulsive disorders.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

The Delights And Dangers Of Credit Card Jumping

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

If you’re thinking of becoming a credit card jumper, you need to be well informed. Here’s what you need about how credit card jumping can work for you.

What Is Credit Card Jumping?

Credit card jumping is the practice of moving debt from credit card to credit card to take advantage of low or nil interest rates.

Who Offers Low Credit Card Interest Rates?

Just about every credit card company offers low introductory interest rates to attract new customers. Some offer permanently low rates, which is good news for anyone who has a debt at a higher interest rate. Others offer 0% on purchases, which means consumers can spend as usual without paying any interest. Finally, many credit card companies offer 0% interest on balance transfers. This is very attractive for credit card jumpers.

How Do I Transfer My Balance To A 0% Card?

It’s simple. Just apply for a credit card as usual. Most credit card application have room for people to list the cards they want to transfer balances from and the amounts they want to transfer. In this case, the balances are transferred automatically when the account is opened. Other credit card companies allow customers to transfer balances after the account has been opened.

Are There Other Incentives For Getting A 0% Credit Card?

Most credit card companies offer other incentives to new cardholders. These include cardholder discounts on win, hotels or travel, travel insurance, money off vouchers and cash back offers. It is worth looking at the range of incentives before deciding on a card.

How Can I Be A Successful Credit Card Jumper?

To make a success of credit card jumping, there are two key things for consumers to do. The first is to make the required repayments on time. The second is to choose a new credit card and move the outstanding balance before the 0% interest rate expires.

What Are The Dangers Of Credit Card Jumping?

Credit card jumping only works if:

- People pay the required amount (the minimum repayment)
- People pay on time
- People move the money before the interest rate goes up.

Failure to do the first two could damage a person’s credit rating. This would make it more difficult for that person to get another credit card. Failure to move the money on time means that the credit card holder will have to pay interest. Since the point of credit card jumping is to reduce debt, this is not a sensible strategy.

It is also best to avoid putting additional spending on the card, as the interest on spending might be different from the balance transfer rate. It is best to check the fine print first.

Some credit card companies now apply a balance transfer fee so that they make some money from credit card jumpers. It is worth shopping around to find the few that don’t. Even with this fee, credit card jumping may be a useful strategy for people with a large debt.

Joe Kenny writes for the Card Guide, a UK credit cards site, apply for a 0% balance transfers to clear your credit card debt today.

Learn Which Juice Extractor Is Right For You

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

What are Juice Extractors?

Juice extractors are electric machines from a variety of manufacturers such as Breville, Kenwood, Green Star, Omega, Champion, Jack Lalane, Samson and L’Equip that are used for the extraction of juice from fruit and vegetables. Juice extractors are perfect for healthy, refreshing and freshly blended treats like fruit and vegetable juices. Juice extractors are the best way to get great tasting nutritious drinks. Juice extractors are not the same as citrus juicers, which are designed to remove the juice from citrus fruit and nothing more. Juice extractors are perfectly suitable for making juice of soft and hard fruits and vegetables as well. Orange, apple and grape juice are all excellent juices that should be included in a healthy diet. Carrots, wheatgrass and barley grass have many outstanding health properties.

Types of Juice Extractors

Typically, automatic juice extractors are categorized into Centrifugal Juicers or Masticating Juicers. Centrifugal Juicers use cutters that shred the food into small pieces that are spun in a basket (where the centrifuge comes in) to extract the juice from the pulp. These centrifugal juice extractors can create oxidation that degrades nutrients over time which means that the juice should be drunk right away. Masticating Juicers chew the food up and are lower speed units that produce a higher quality juice because they produce less oxidation and release more nutrients. The juices produced have a longer shelf life. There is also a third type of juice extractors and these are the Hydraulic Press Juicers such as the Norwalk Juicer which cuts and grates the produce using a vortex triturator, with the resulting mass extracted into a linen bag which is then placed under a hydraulic press. The hydraulic press then exerts a huge downforce that sees the extraction from the Norwalk Juicer of 50%-100% more juice than other juicers. These juice extractors produce very little oxidation and are touted to make the highest nutrient juice, but are also much more expensive than the centrifugal or masticating juice extractors.

Which is the Best Juice Extractor?

The answer to this really lies with the user. The fastest juice extractors are the centrifugal juicers, but they are unable to handle leafy greens and wheatgrass as well as the other types. The hydraulic press extractors produce the best juice but are very expensive. And the masticating juicer requires more physical effort. So, to pick one machine from one manufacturer is not possible with each manufacturer having a range of home, commercial, pro or professional juice extractors. When buying a juice extractor, the best way is to decide which features you require in a machine, the type of juice you want to extract, whether from fruit such as apples, vegetables such as carrots or leafy greens such as wheatgrass, and the power needed.

This article was written by Piers Crispin, a writer on consumer affairs. Please visit juicers.organic-knowledge.com http://juicers.organic-knowledge.com for more information on Juice Extractors articles on juicing.

Genetic Obesity and The Legacy of Family Fat

March 31st, 2008 by sunshineblog

We all know at least one person who seems to have been overweight their entire lives. Or perhaps you feel you fit this description along with most of your overweight family members. If obesity seems to run in your family it is highly likely that you could be experiencing the effects of genetically inherited obesity.

A genetic predisposition to obesity means you may be dealing with one or more of the following issues:

1. High levels of LPL (the fat storing enzyme):

Some people’s fat cells contain elevated concentrations of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, or LPL, whose synthesis is governed by genes. LPL enables fat cells to store triglycerides (fats). So the higher the concentration of LPL in your cells, the more easily your cells store fat, and the more likely it is that your body will remain obese.

2. Brain cells that don’t respond to Leptin (the appetite-suppressing hormone):

This aspect of the genetic inheritance of obesity involves a gene known as the ob (obese) gene. Leptin is a protein hormone made by the ob gene inside fat cells. It stimulates the brain’s appetite control center, the hypothalamus, to suppress appetite and speed up metabolism.

Leptin is actually released in proportion to fat cells, meaning that most overweight people have high levels of this appetite-suppressing hormone. This counterintuitive bit of knowledge reveals a miscommunication that occurs in the bodies of overweight people. Researchers believe that the brain cells of most obese people may be unresponsive to leptin because most of these people feel hungry and stay overweight despite their elevated leptin levels.

3. Low to No levels of Leptin (the appetite-suppressing hormone):

There are also a small percentage of obese people whose ob gene actually fails to produce leptin at all. Mice with defective versions of this gene weigh up to three times as much as normal mice!

What Treatment Options are Available for Inherited Obesity?

Treatment directed at modifying these faulty genetic traits is the most effective solution to inherited obesity. Research into therapies which can correct or prevent genetic disorders is on the forefront of the medical technology frontier. However, the timeline for the development of these therapies is unknown and you may not experience a gene therapy breakthrough for obesity in your lifetime.

Amazingly, homeopathic literature contains many case studies in which genetic predispositions are corrected. Homeopathy is the only medical therapy at present that can make claims to effectively deal with a genetic predisposition to being overweight. This is because certain homeopathic ingredients, called constitutional remedies, have a clinically documented ability to treat, in all ways, a person’s health.

The term constitution indicates the physical makeup of the body, including the mode with which its various functions are performed, the activity of its metabolic processes, the manner and degree of its reactions to stimuli, and its power of resistance to the attack of disease-causing organisms. Constitutional remedies awaken the healing abilities resident within each and every one of us, no matter the cause.

A homeopathic doctor can recommend the specific constitutional homeopathic remedy or remedies for you as an individual. During the course of a constitutional treatment for genetic obesity you can expect the homeopath to inquire about changes in all of the following areas:

(1) specific physical functioning, general physical changes
(2) mental activity, emotions, dreams, creativity, spirituality
(3) perception of self, relationships, perceptions by others
(4) coping, ability to adapt sense of freedom or feeling less stuck
(5) lifestyle, energy, well-being

The homeopath recognizes that being overweight affects all aspects of your life, not just your body. If you prefer self-treatment, monitor yourself for changes in those areas listed above. The holistic healing homeopathy stimulates within you will follow a course that is right for you as an individual.

When treating yourself with constitutional homeopathic medicines, there are a few options available. Pre-formulated constitutional enhancers are available in many stores and online. Additionally, some homeopathic weight control medicines are designed to act constitutionally. These homeopathic medicines for weight loss will indicate they correct the causes behind obesity. Or do a bit of research in the online homeopathic materia medicas and determine which specific constitutional remedy sounds most suited for you.

Either way, a genetic predisposition doesn’t have to mean a life sentence to a struggle with your weight. Take control of your health and your life by beginning your venture into natural homeopathic medicines, and in the words of the well-known naturopath Dr. Frank King, “Enjoy the Journey”!
